Savanhdary Vongpoothorn at S.E.A Focus Singapore
24 - 27 Jan 2019
S.E.A Focus
Block 9, Lock Road, Gillman Barracks, Singapore, 108937
Niagara Galleries Melbourne, in association with Santy Saptari Art Consulting and John Cruthers present works by Savanhdary Vongpoothorn at the inaugural edition of S.E.A Focus Singapore.
Born in Laos in 1971, Savanhdary came to Australia in 1979. Inspired by the Australian landscape, Lao traditional textiles, Indian miniatures and, in recent work, Japanese Buddhism, Savanhdary’s work illustrates a subtle and complex interweaving of visual form and cultural signification, representing stories of experience, memory and identity. She uses several novel techniques, the most notable being perforation, where the canvas support is pierced from behind with a soldering iron to form a raised grid pattern across the paint surface.
In her first exposure to the Singapore market, two bodies of work by Savanhdary will be presented - paintings from her series in 2011 and her more recent series dated 2017-2018. The two periods reflect her artistic development and ongoing exploration of her Laotian culture and religious tradition, and are chosen to give a more informed view of her work to audiences in Southeast Asia.
